This I Believe Essay
The queen of my life
When you are facing several choices, do you hesitate and ask others for help? When you are confused about your future, do you talk with your family and let them decide your future? Should your family or friends choose your life for you? I believe no one can decide my future, except me.
James Samuel Gordon, a famous American author and Harvard- educated psychiatrist, said” It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not.”
I have lived in Shanghai since I was 2 years old. When I was 15, I had to choose my future. I couldn’t study in Chinese high schools in Shanghai because I am not a Shanghainese. I needed to choose if I would go back to my hometown Jiangxi, or stay in Shanghai and go to the American high school. I was confused and afraid. I didn’t know about anything about schools in my hometown or the American school. I didn’t have much time to decide.
One day as my mother was driving meme home after school, we were talking about life. She told me I was too dependent on her. Every time when there was a choice to be made, I would ask my mother to choose for me. I told my mother that I thought she would always choose the best for me. I thought she knew me best. However, my mother said that only I know myself best. Then she told me about her life when she was young.
My mother was unhealthy when she was young. My grandfather told her that she needed to exercise more. My mother thought for a few days and told my grandfather that she wanted to become an athlete. My grandfather said nothing. He and my grandmother supported her. My grandfather asked his friend who works at a sports school in my hometown to help my mother get admitted to that school. My mother chose to run the hurdles.
After that, my mother needed to go to two schools: normal school and sport school, working on both her courses and doing hurdles. My mother told me that she got up at 5:00 every day to run. Then at 7:00, she went to class. After school she went to the sport school and practiced hurdles. At 8:00 she went back home, had dinner and wrote homework with a little light at night. In this hard condition, my mother chose to work hard. She was an honor student in both normal school and sports school. She was good at every subject in school, and was always in the top five students in her grade. Her coach liked her very much.
When she was 18, she went to college. Her coach gave her two choices: Beijing or Shanghai. Both cities had colleges that were very famous. My mother chose to go to Shanghai and lived there. After she graduated from college, she became a coach in the sport school. She was quite successful in her early life.
She made three choices early in her life, all by her own. She was independent when she was young. She never asked her parents to choose for her. My mother told me that she can give me suggestions, but she couldn’t choose everything for me.
I was really surprised and admired her decisive choices. I want to be more like her, and make my own decisions. After she told me this story, I know that no one can change my life, except me. I can control my life, but others can’t. I am the queen of my destiny.
When I am ready to change, I will decide for myself. No one needs to help, and no one can stop me. This I believe.

Introduction:
I done this essay on June 7th, 2014. I chose "no one can change my life, except myself" as my central believe. After we wrote this essay, we need to record our voice and find pictures to make a video about it.
Reflection:
I think the hardest part of this assignment is to do the video. I am not good at making videos. I think the part that I do well is the essay. I find out my central believe and a story about it. If I can do it again, I will probably change another believe because I have many believes. I learned that writing an essay that can persuade others is not easy.
